The very first flight of a vessel with passengers took place in front of the King and Marie-Antoinette, on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles on September 19, 1783.  The hot air balloon had three passengers: a sheep, a rooster, and a duck.  A few weeks later, the event was immortalized in this illustration.
